Innovation Never Rests. Over the past 10 years, KUIU has changed the way we look at hunting gear. Before we dive into the Ten for Ten products that got us here, it’s fitting that we look back to the very beginning.
KUIU’s founder, Jason Hairston got into the business of hunting gear because he couldn’t find the performance products he wanted for his style of hunting. He needed gear specifically built for extreme mountain conditions.
In 2005, he created the technical apparel and gear category for hunting. But since those products were sold in stores, with a high retail markup, he was limited to sourcing lower-quality materials. He wanted to develop new products with the most sophisticated technology and materials available, but they’d be too expensive sold through traditional retail.
After his first business sold in 2009, he took everything he learned and started KUIU Ultralight Hunting. Established in 2011, he built KUIU to innovate with the finest materials in the world, surmount the shortcomings of traditional retail, and sell it straight to you at a lower price.
So, on our 10th anniversary, we celebrate our Ten for Ten: The ten innovations over the last ten years that have fundamentally transformed the way people approach hunting to maximize their potential in the field. Here’s to the products that have shaped KUIU and have kept us ultralight, comfortable, and dry over the last decade.
Introduced in 2011, the Attack Pant brought industry first innovations like hip vents, spandex-free Primeflex® stretch fabric, and a perfected fit that won’t succumb to fabric fatigue during long-duration hunts. With hundreds of thousands sold, a 4.9 out of 5-star rating, 7000+ reviews, and proven over the last decade—their only competition are our other pants. Often copied, but never equaled, they’re the pant to own if you only own one.
In 2011 we introduced the very first modular pack system with a patented carbon fiber frame. This revolutionary system gave hunters the ability to leverage one frame and suspension with multiple bag options to meet their individual hunt demands. This system has seen many evolutionary upgrades over the years and today it stands at the top as the most comfortable, versatile, and lightest pack system available.
Not all Merino fabrics are created equal. In 2014 we introduced the best Merino the hunting industry had ever seen. Instead of using traditional ringspun yarn that constricts wool’s natural performance, we leveraged Nuyarn® technology that untwists the yarn, allowing each individual fiber to work its magic. Unpolluted by spandex, our itch-free, 17.5-micron ULTRA Merino is warmer, stronger, dries faster, and has more stretch than any other Merino.
Our founder studied the concealment of nature's predators to find inspiration for our unique camouflage patterns, rather than looking to imitate sticks and leaves. The hunter’s need for concealment and outline break up at all distances in any terrain lead to our high-contrast camo patterns. They feature a macro pattern for extended distances, and micro details for close contact ranges. Vias was introduced in 2011, Verde in 2012, and Valo in 2020.
Quiet, durable, and wind-resistant since their introduction in 2011 and 2012, the Guide Series was inspired by an elite crew of trusted partners and proven over the last decade. Redefining what soft-shell hunting gear should be, the Guide Series is built from patented Primeflex fabric with a micro-fleece backer. Today, they proudly stand on the podium among the products that started it all.
As an industry first in 2011, we launched 4-way stretch, spandex-free, waterproof, and breathable rain gear. Hunters quickly learned the benefits of a technical layering system’s outer shell that featured high-performance stretch fabrics, coupled with a tailored fit for mountain hunting. Since introduction a decade ago, our ultralight packable rain gear has had no equal.
As the very first binocular harness with a one-hand operable forward-folding lid, our original bino harness was often copied but never duplicated. Throughout evolutionary revisions, the PRO Bino Harness is the premier optics stowing solution. It’s purpose built with a quiet fleece-lined waterproof fabric and independent connection straps, so the pouch and harness stay comfortably secure while glassing.
In 2018 we introduced our first Hybrids. Leveraging specialized materials in strategic placement, the Axis Hybrid Series and Talus Hybrid Pant were born to improve performance. By adding panelized waterproof protection to our already proven designs, hunters experienced multi-condition versatility they’d never had before.
Although Down is the lightest and warmest insulation known to man, it was never a viable option for mountain hunting conditions—until we came along. We start with the highest quality European Goose Down available, perfect it through proprietary cleaning processes, and treat it so it’s virtually waterproof. Not only is it worthy of any hunt, but it’s also independently tested by the IDFL as the best performing down in the industry.
Some say you can’t have lightweight gear without sacrificing durability—we like proving them wrong. In 2019, we launched our next line of innovation, the Kutana series. We took nylon material and wove it in revolutionary new ways—the result is a collection of the lightest and toughest stretch-nylon fabrics ever produced. Kutana takes on punishing terrain, thick vegetation, and extreme weather with confidence.
