MERINO WOOL IS A PERFORMANCE FIBER

Merino wool keeps sheep cool in the summer and warm in winter—it can do the same for a hunter. It’s versatile across extreme weather conditions and it’s an ideal weight for mountain hunting. It’s even odor resistant because it’s excellent at managing moisture.

If there’s ever a problem with the performance of merino, it’s not its natural qualities, it’s the conventional spinning methods that inhibit its natural abilities in thermoregulation and moisture management.

Nuyarn Technology captures the natural benefits of merino to create the performance hunting base-layer system found in our ULTRA and PRO Merino collections. Nuyarn makes merino wool performs as close as possible to the way it does in nature.

SPINNING MERINO WOOL TWISTS THE LIFE OUT OF IT

There are two conventional ways of spinning merino yarn, and both twist the life out of it.

  • Ring spinning- wool fibers are twisted together to create a rope like structure.
  • Core spinning- twisted wool fibers are wound around a core filament.

Both techniques compress the natural air pockets, induce stress, create loops, and restrict the natural movement of the fibers—creating a rope-like structure that can be itchy next to the skin.

The wool fibers are twisted so tightly, the inner fibers cannot effectively absorb your body vapor, leaving the burden on the outermost fibers. Once saturated with sweat or water, the inner fibers trap the moisture which causes odor causing bacteria to grow, slow drying time, and adds unwanted weight.

NUYARN SOLVES THE PROBLEM OF CONVENTIONAL SPINNING TECHNIQUES

The merino wool fibers are drafted around an inner high-performance nylon filament, first in the S direction, then neutral and then in the Z direction in a two-ply configuration. No twist is introduced over the length of the fiber. It sounds simple, but no one else is doing this with yarn.

And no one else can create true performance merino wool fabrics. It is not ring spun. It is not core spun. Nuyarn is twist-free spinning.

HOW DOES NUYARN MERINO STACK UP AGAINST THE COMPETITION?

Using the standardized Martindale abrasion test, Nuyarn is 8.8x more durable. This test is performed with a standardized abrasive surface at a standard force. The higher the Martindale number (the number of rubs), the more resistant a fabric is to abrasion.

WHAT DO THE NUMBERS MEAN IN ULTRA AND PRO MERINO GARMENTS?

The number in the name of KUIU products is the garment’s fabric weight in Grams per Square Meter (g/m2 or GSM). It’s the weight of a one-by-one meter square of fabric measured in grams.

The 17.5 Micron reference is the diameter of the individual wool fiber. The lower the number the finer and softer it will feel next to skin. Nuyarn Merino is as fine as cashmere. In comparison, a human hair is roughly 100 microns.
