KUIU Conservation Direct Nevada – KCD6
In April, KUIU Conservation Direct®, along with Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) and Nevada Bighorns Unlimited (NBU) completed a historic reintroduction of California Bighorn Sheep to the Montana Mountains of Northern Nevada. This translocation was part one of an effort to bring sheep back to a once thriving huntable population that was decimated by disease in 2016.
After the dust settled, fifteen healthy pregnant ewes and three young rams were welcomed back to some of Nevada’s best sheep habitat. Like all CD projects, this one was fully funded by KUIU Conservation Direct.
In addition, we set up a customer participation initiative to fund the GPS collars going on the newly released sheep. 18 GPS collars were made available for sponsorship through the NBU website. After one email notice and in less than six hours, all 18 collars were fully paid for by 63 generous donors! Three days later, every collar was on a newly released bighorn. This is the fastest we have ever sold out and an incredible testament to the Conservation Direct model. We want to thank everyone who purchased all or a portion of a collar.
The translocation was manned by a fantastic crew of volunteers from NDOW, KUIU CD, and NBU providing hands on assistance in the capture and relocation process. This is the ninth translocation for KUIU Conservation Direct since founded 2020.
